br
If you had to put a price tag on your weekend bag how much do you think it would be?
You may be surprised to learn that the average contents value of the weekend bag now tops ?1,000!

According to research released by the Post Office, women pack an average of ?1,208 in their weekend bags. This includes items such as expensive make up bags, hair dryers and hair straighteners.

The typical man packs on average ?862 worth of contents, including: a digital camera, MP3 player and various other gadgets considered essential. Both sexes are equally as bad when it comes to packing designer clothes and shoes and this can add much value to the luggage contents.

This averages out to a value of ?1,035 for the typical weekend bag.

The problem is that the majority of travel insurance policies have a low ceiling limit when it comes to individual item maximum value. For example, should you pack your laptop computer you may find that your cover only stretches to ?300 for any one item.

You may wish to enquire about bolt-on insurance to cover the shortfall for particularly expensive items. This is something a lot of insurers now offer across the range and will allow you to pay an extra fee for extended cover on a particular item or eventuality.

The take-up of holiday insurance by the British public is still at an alarmingly low level and many holiday makers travel without any form of cover at all. It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking Ill only be away for a couple of days, I dont need any cover.

The reality is there is just as much risk involved with a short duration holiday as there is with a longer stay. Many Brits experience theft of their valuables every year – and without cover they face the prospect of having to pay out to replace their valuables.

When you are looking at a prospective policy you should consider the following:

libThe cover level provided for your baggage and possessions

liThe single item maximum cover

liWill you be travelling more than once in the year and if so would you save money by purchasing a multi-trip policy?

liDo you really need to take every item you have packed? Make a list and examine to see whether there is anything you can leave behind, this will also be handy should you have your baggage stolen as it will act as a list of contents./b

Remember when searching for cover not to look just for cheap travel insurance. Obviously you will want to get a good deal and with a bit of patience and determination you should be able to find a policy that gives you all the features you desire for a competitive price.

Once you have finalised your holiday preparations you should make some final checks to ensure you have adequate cover. Make a list of contents for your weekend bag, and ensure your valuables, such as jewellery, are hidden in a separate compartment of your bag if possible, while anything fragile is packed carefully and securely./pbr

Planning to go for an adventurous trip to some distant countries? Then you should not step out of your home without adventure travel insurance. Adventure travel insurance ensures that whatever problem you face during your travel, those will be taken care of by it.

Travel be it normal or adventurous involves risks to some extent such as accidents, natural catastrophes etc. But when it is adventurous travel, the intensity of the risks becomes even larger. This is because the name adventure itself implies some unconventional activities. You might get severe injuries while on your adventurous traveling spree. There are several risks involved in bungee jumping, trekking, mountain climbing etc. these risks may land you up in hospitals of foreign countries. But the cost of medical treatments can be very high in those countries. These can lead to negative consequences upon your savings account. With a proper adventurer travel insurance policy, you can handle these expenses without having to shell out much from your pockets.

Adventure travel insurance acts like an extra security to your travel plans. A normal travel insurance policy might not provide you with an extensive cover for your adventurous travels. It may not provide security for activities like bungee jumping, mountain climbing etc. But, with an adventurous travel insurance plan you can avail for yourself all the security that you might need on your risky trip.

You can get single trip adventurous travel insurance for your single trips and you can get annual or multi-trip adventurous travel insurance for your adventurous travels all round the year. If you are frequent risk taker, you should surely purchase an annual adventurous travel insurance policy. This way you can save your money and time.

Before investing in an adventure travel insurance policy, you need to undertake a thorough research of the insurance market. You are required to study the various pros and cons of different policies. Nowadays almost all the companies have their own websites and all the required information are made available in those websites. All you need to do is sit in front of your computer and invest in an adventure travel insurance policy when you are satisfied that a particular policy is meeting your expectations. So do not delay your purchase; go and buy an adventure travel insurance policy now!

We have all seen or personally experienced the devastating floods of recent weeks across the UK. Looking at the flooded streets and submerged cars, it is difficult to imagine what effected families are going through as they face another week without their homes, cars or even running water. For most people, however, insurance policies will cover at least the material losses, if not the emotional distress. But how far do you consider your insurance cover if you are driving abroad? Faced with a similar flooding situation while on your summer vacation might get you a celebrity shot on ‘Holidays from Hell’, but if you were to look out from your villa balcony to see your car bobbing in the storm waters, you may feel far happier just knowing you’d carefully organised your car insurance, in advance.

While many of us take pains to choose the right insurance for our homes and vehicles in the UK, there is far more confusion as to what happens when we travel abroad. Packing your car and driving into the sunset for, say, a road trip around Europe, may sound like an adventure of a lifetime. And there’s no reason it shouldn’t be – just ensure you check your insurance cover ahead of your trip. Like many drivers, you may assume, for example, that a UK car insurance policy will provide the same level of cover if you take your car abroad. In most cases, however, existing policies will only cover for basic road traffic accidents (RTAs) or at best, third party cover for overseas trips. This means you would not be covered for theft, fire or damage. Nor would you be covered for legal matters following a car accident.

You may also have heard of a ‘Green Card’ for driving abroad? This is an internationally recognised document, that proves you have the minimum insurance cover required by law in the country visited. The key word, however, is ‘minimum’ – the card does not provide insurance in itself and although it will provide useful evidence of your basic cover, you will still need to get further insurance cover if you want comprehensive protection.

Getting the same insurance cover you enjoy in the UK when travelling abroad is a simple enough process, however. You could just ask your existing insurer to extend the scope of your cover before you travel, if it is not already included in your policy. An additional premium may be charged for this extension and will depend on where you’re travelling and for how long. Alternatively, this may be a good opportunity to check out the car insurance market generally – it’s always worth ensuring you’re getting the best deal especially if you’re planning to frequently travel with your car. Also ask your chosen insurer about Green Cards – although you no longer need a Green Card in EU countries, it still provides useful evidence of basic insurance, and if you’re travelling outside of the EU you will certainly need one. Your insurer should be able to help you obtain one.

Some insurers may offer what is known as ‘Green Card cover’ – as Green Cards in themselves are free (and do not provide insurance cover in themselves), this really means that you are paying for extending your UK insurance cover overseas. Whichever kind of cover you choose, though, and whether you take a Green Card or not, be sure to take your insurance documents with you, just so that you are prepared if you need to make a claim. And don’t leave any such documents in your car – if you were to face a UK-style flood situation while abroad, your careful organisation and paperwork would be meeting a soggy end.

You may also want to consider your breakdown cover. You can purchase car breakdown policies with your holiday insurance or separately. Your motor insurer might also provide this cover. Such insurance might cover the cost of hiring a car while yours is being repaired, road-side assistance and emergency repairs, the cost of returning your car to the UK or sending out spare parts, and even emergency accommodation if you can’t use your vehicle. Prices will vary depending on what level of cover you want or need, but whatever policy you choose it will be a great reassurance, especially if you are driving long distances.

The following general tips may also help you plan your driving trip of a lifetime:
* Get your vehicle serviced before you set off on your holidays and ensure you research and comply with any vehicle requirements in the countries you are visiting. * Do not forget your motor insurance certificate, Green Card (if issued), and details of any breakdown and travel insurance, together with any emergency helpline numbers. Also take your registration document, driving licence and, of course, passport. For some countries, you may need to take an International Driving Permit – check your destination/s in advance. * Get a fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, tool kit, spare bulbs and warning triangle for your vehicle. Many of these items are a legal requirement in some EU countries. * Take a spare set of keys and keep them somewhere safe! * Familiarise yourself with road signs and the road rules of the country you are visiting before you go. * Do not forget your registration document, driving licence and passport. Also check your destination/s to see whether you need to take an International Driving Permit with you.

All this planning may not sit very comfortably with the ideal of speeding into the great unknown with just your car and the road ahead. But if you really want a road trip of a lifetime, a little advance preparation will ensure that you can have just that.

This article explains basic travel insurance information. Travel insurance sometimes called holiday insurance should provide these basic things.

1- Cover for canceling or cutting short your holiday, for reasons outside your control;
2- Missed transport or delayed departures for reasons outside your control;
3- Medical and other emergency expenses;
4- Personal injury and death;
5- Damaged, lost or stolen personal property;
6- Accidental damage or injury you cause to someone else.

You can buy annual or single-trip policies.

Most travel insurance policies do not include high risk sports and dangerous activities, such as ski-ing, mountain climbing or scuba diving. So check if you are covered. If not you will have to pay extra.

If you have to cancel or cut short your trip. You must show you had good reason to shorten or cancel it. A list of the reasons will be included in your policy.

It is worth checking your household contents insurance policy. As this may already cover you for loss or damage to your personal belongings, while you are abroad. If this is the case you should ask for a discount. In the event of a claim it simplifies matters,and your claim and pay-out will be quicker, because if there are two insurance companies involved,they will both spend months haggling over who is responsible for the claim.

If you have a credit card it sometimes include free travel insurance. If you use it to pay for your holiday check carefully what you are covered for, as it may not provide full cover for everything.

Some package holiday companies offer their own insurance. However you do not have to accept it. You can purchase your own insurance separately, usually much cheaper. A travel agent must not charge you more for a package holiday,because you did not buy their insurance. If a travel agent tries to do this, you should contact your nearest trading standards department.

MAKING A CLAIM
If you have to make claim, contact the insurance company as soon as possible to request a claim form. They may have an international helpline you can call, usually printed on your policy document or in the handbook. If not phone them as soon as you return home.

You are expected to take reasonable care of your belongings. And your insurer will want evidence of loss or damage. When a crime is involved , you must try to report it to the police within 24 hours, if possible.

Keep receipts for all goods and services that you wish to claim for.

PERSONAL INJURY AND MEDICAL EMERGENCIES

Always get receipts for medication and treatment.

If you need medical treatment on holiday, telephone your insurer as soon as possible to get authorization for the treatment. If possible contact them before agreeing to the cost of the treatment.

Do you have a pre-existing medical condition? This means that, if you already had a health problem or illness before you purchased the policy. You must tell the insurance company, or your claim will be rejected.

Don`t rely on your EHIC card to cover all your medical costs abroad. As those countries that do offer UK citizens state healthcare, will only provide the same care as a citizen of that country would expect to receive.

Always take your insurance information, policy documents or photo copies with you. So you have details of what to do, and who to telephone in an emergency.

One of the first things we consider when travelling overseas is travel insurance. But why don’t we consider the same for domestic journeys? Domestic travel insurance is something that is frequently neglected by Australians. The risk of complications arising is not minimised, so there is no conceivable logic behind not covering yourself for trips within Australia.

Of course, a large amount of people hold health insurance and life insurance policies, which eliminates the need to cover yourself for medical treatments and the elements covered by your life insurance policy. However, there are many other travel mishaps that can ruin a trip and put you out of pocket.

What does domestic travel insurance cover?

Domestic travel insurance does not typically include medical expenses, but policies are packed with a bunch of other useful levels of coverage. Some things a domestic travel insurance policy should cover include:

Cancellation costs – This reimburses you for any pre-booked travel arrangements, such as accommodation, that have been cancelled.
Personal liability – This is a very important element of the policy. It covers you if you accidentally damage another person’s property.
Luggage cover – This covers loss, damage and theft of luggage and other personal items. It also covers losses due to credit card theft.
Additional expenses – In the event of illness of one of your travelling group or delayed pre-booked travel arrangements, this will cover you for extra accommodation costs and any other costs you may incur.
Rental vehicle insurance excess – Covers the excess if you have an accident in or damage a rental car.
Skiing piste closure – Cover if the skiing resort is closed due to weather or other complications when you have pre-booked.
Skiing/golfing equipment – Covers you for loss, theft or damage of hired ski or golf equipment.

Good reasons to purchase domestic travel insurance

Apart from the peace of mind that travel insurance offers, there are common scenarios that people don’t consider before travelling without insurance. Not all claims on travel insurance are rare occurrences. Some very real situations you may encounter that your travel insurance will cover include:

You’re on a family holiday and one of the kids gets sick. Due to this you must book an extra few nights accommodation for the whole family and miss your non-refundable flights.
You’ve packed your whole wardrobe in your suitcase and your luggage gets lost in transit.
You’ve pre-paid for a ski trip with your friends and the site is closed due to extreme weather conditions.

Insurance is one of those areas that is generally unavoidable; you’ll need it in some form or another somewhere along the line. For the majority of us that just happens to be every day.

One area always in the spotlight one way or another is travel insurance. Yet many of us still aren’t sure if it’s something we really need and to this end, many of us travel without it every year. Here are 10 top tips to help you make the right decision.

1)	It is a common myth that if you take the European health card (E111) with you when you travel, you will be covered for anything that goes wrong. This is not the case. The card is just there to be given to a hospital, etc, in an emergency so they will treat you (this is still a must have for this reason). You will still be billed for any treatment you receive in a private health care system. For this reason holiday insurance can be invaluable.

2)	When applying for your insurance policy, you must inform the company of any/all medical conditions you suffer from, no matter how small or insignificant they seem.
This could prove to be something that voids your policy if you do not. You will find this most probably increases your premium, but it is worth it to keep your policy valid.

3)	When looking for cheap travel insurance, be careful to check you are not losing out on any coverage that you will need, such as theft, cancellation of holiday/flights. You may find that some polices really are too good to be true and cover you for the bare minimum.

4)	If you are planning to go on a trip that may include activities that could be viewed to be dangerous by the insurance company, you may find you will not be covered under most policies. You will need to find a policy aimed at covering for such activities, i.e. a winter ski policy or adventure holiday insurance. If you are thinking of backpacking, you would similarly be best to look for a backpacker’s policy.

5)	The majority of companies offer single, multi trip, family and annual policies. If you are going to travel just once in a year as a single person or a couple, it will work out cheaper to apply for a single trip travel insurance policy. If however you will be travelling 2 or more times, a multi trip policy will save you money. The same applies to a family group, finding separate policies will be expensive, opt for a family policy and you will save money and most probably receive cover for children (under 18) free.

6)	Always check excesses on the policy you choose, most policies are peppered with them and finding a policy with a better or no excess in an area you think relevant is prudent.

7)	An important thing to remember in regards to item/theft insurance is; if you leave valuables unattended/ out of sight, you will not be protected.
An important “don’t” is not to let your holiday provider package the holiday insurance for you as it will work out much more expensive in the long run. In less than a couple of minutes you can find a much cheaper quote on a comparison site. Research from Alliance and Leicester has shown UK holiday makers overspend by ?1.3 billion on travel insurance each year, for this very reason.

9) It is important to remember that the insurance company will not pay out for an accident caused whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

10)	Finally, in research done by the internet company Moneysupermarket.com it was found that you should ensure you have the following amounts of cover as minimum: Medical expenses ?2m, personal liability ?1m, cancellation ?3,000, baggage ?1,500, cash ?250, a 24 hour emergency line and cover for legal costs and finally financial ombudsman service membership in case you need to complain.

Instead of having to buy a holiday insurance for each trip annual holiday insurance, allows you to cover all travel vacation for a year instead. Because the policy need not be written for each holiday, saving you time and effort of having to call an agent. It also saves money in the long run by not having to pay the fees incurred each time a policy is written. Annual insurance coverage will vary according to politics, of course, but overall, they cover extended stays of up to 45 days with the option of adding more time for sports, which are treated separately since they are considered inherently more dangerous or expensive to cover. If you go out for a holiday resort, for example, you definitely want to add sports coverage if injured on the tracks. Annual insurance may also cover your business trip with some restrictions. Make sure you understand any restrictions on your policy before you travel. Some restrictions include travel to perform manual labor, for example. If you are a keen golfer, may also consider adding coverage only for their golf vacation. Knowing what the cost to warehouse clubs would not make sense to cover up if something happens? The airlines lose luggage all the time, and not always recover everything. What if your luggage is going to Altoona and you're on your way to Alberta? What if you're on the golf course in beautiful Bermuda and get hit in the head? Would your current policy cover the visit to the hospital for? Ensure that by adding your insurance coverage to annual golf. The purchase annual holiday insurance is a better idea for frequent travelers. Maybe you travel once a month. Nine times this year to remember to call and get a holiday insurance policy. Three times he does not, with the first two are without incident. In the third however, remains the rental car, they end up in hospital, losing his wallet and prescription drugs in a single stroke. What next? Take the concern of the frequent leisure or business travel investment in the annual holiday insurance at the beginning of each year.
