If you’re living in southern California and you happen to rack a rare, precious day out what are you going to do with it-pay yet another visit to the tired strip mall down the street? Or take advantage of proximity and hop the border to Mexico?

Thousands of Americans can’t be wrong. Mexico is a great place to visit, and it’s located within convenient driving distance of plenty of cities in SoCal. Before you hop behind the wheel, however, make sure you’ve got all your ducks in a row and plenty of auto insurance to keep you covered on the trip.

Ideally, your California auto insurance policy would be enough to keep you protected when you hop over to Mexico. Many companies that operate heavily in SoCal have arrangements with auto repair shops to cover you within a certain distance of the California border, which makes life really easy for commuters who drive from Cali to Mexico every day for work. Some insurance companies don’t have this kind of handy dandy set-up, however, which is when you need to start looking into other options.

If you know that you’re going to be making a trip to Mexico, regardless of how long your stay is going to be take the time to contact your insurance agent. They can make your life really, really easy by letting you know whether or not your current policy will extend to where you’re going. If it doesn’t, they can probably give you a valuable referral to a company that specializes in hooking tourists up with short term insurance that can sell you a Mexican policy for the duration of your stay.

When it comes to car insurance, Mexico is even tougher than the United States. California drivers are required to carry a minimum of $20,000 in auto insurance coverage, although most usually pick up more just to be on the safe side. (A good auto insurance dealer will start selling policies at $50,000.) You can purchase these policies from dealer once you actually get to Mexico, but that’s assuming that:

a) You’ll be able to find a dealer, and

b) You won’t get into an accident on the way there.

You know what happens when you assume.

Instead, most people choose to err on the side of caution and purchase a policy from a dealer in SoCal that specializes in working with Mexican insurance. That dealer will take down the details of your visit, then connect you with a short term policy (usually either one day, one week, two weeks, one month or six months) issued by a Mexican auto insurance dealer for the duration of your stay.

You’ll be protected the minute you drive across the border, and your California auto insurance policy will pick you back up the minute you get back. Who could ask for anything more?

If you and your family are planning a vacation and would like to include beauty and a new culture while keeping costs reasonable, you may want to consider traveling to Mexico by RV. There is no question that the beaches, cities, and people of Mexico offer a uniquely relaxing vacation experience, making it an incredibly popular destination.

The benefits that come with crossing the border in your RV are now better than ever. You are sure to save money especially while traveling along the western coast cities where hotels and resorts are often high priced. You will also save on dining expenses since you have the ability to cook from the comfort of your RV. With the dropping costs of diesel fuel, your gas prices will be lower than youd expect. You are sure to enjoy the stability of a permanent bed, bathroom, and kitchen, avoiding the need to live out of your suitcase. With an RV, you arent restrained by a hotel reservation; you can choose spontaneous trips, staying or leaving an area as you want. By staying out of the crowded tourist areas when parking, you will be sure to meet some wonderful local people and experience a side of Mexico you may never see otherwise.

There are a few potential complications that can easily be avoided if you plan ahead and go prepared. Unlike the US, there will not be multiple RV parks in every city, particularly as you venture away from the Pacific Coastal area. You will want to research and download or buy camping maps, RV travel guides, and toll road maps. There are plenty of parks to stay overnight when you know where to find them. When taking your RV to Mexico, you will need to purchase Mexican RV insurance, so shop around and find the best rates before you leave. With a little bit of planning, youll find your vacation enjoyable, economical, convenient, and flexible.

The list of beaches, cities, and rural areas you can visit is extensive, but there a few top destinations you might want to look into. If you long for gorgeous beaches, perfect weather, and a full and exciting nightlife, Acapulco is a place for you. To find the highest quality in water sports, fishing, golf, and more, make a stop at Los Cabos. For a glimpse of rich history, culture, and entertainment head to Mexico City. The opportunities are vast when you are vacationing to Mexico in your RV.

Why your current plan is not enough while your current auto insurance may provide limited coverage along the border regions of Mexico, in most cases only covers the costs for you and your car. The Republic of Mexico requires proof that you can pay the costs due to injury or death of persons in your vehicle, property damage caused by your vehicle, and medical expenses of others in your vehicle. There is an additional consideration that the authorities do not recognize as legitimate policy unless written by an admitted insurance carrier in Mexico. For this reason you should buy an insurance policy in Mexico from a company authorized to do business in Mexico. How to Find a Mexican Insurance Plan is highly recommended that you purchase auto insurance before entering Mexico in Mexico with his car. Despite Mexico insurance can be purchased from various suppliers just before crossing the border, which will have great difficulty to see if your policy is a quality company approved by the government of Mexico, if you have adequate coverage for your trip If the areas or activities you plan to do excluded, or if you do not even get the best price for the policy. The easiest and quickest way to find a Mexico auto insurance is online. Look for sites that offer more than one policy, and allow you to compare and customize quotes for policies that offer. What to Look For in an Insurance Plan Mexico minimum insurance required by Mexican law is liability coverage. However, depending on the severity, location and / or duration of the investigation by authorities will not be enough. When selecting a plan, look for one that offers at least the following:
